Recap of the LUGPA 2022 Annual Meeting

Highest-attended LUGPA meeting ever, with more than 960 attendees and the largest exhibit hall to date!

A Message from the Incoming President, Dr. Evan Goldfischer

I am deeply honored to serve as the president of LUGPA, an organization that has made tremendous strides in strengthening urology and the independent practice of medicine as a whole. To advance this progress, we must continue to educate policymakers on the benefits of integrated urologic care.

As president, I hope to both fortify and advance the state of independent urology, and by doing so, help ensure that every patient has access to the high-quality, affordable and efficient urologic care that they deserve. We are going to continue to thrive in 2023 and into the future.

Dr. Goldfischer has set three key priorities for his term as LUGPA president:

  1. Further expand on LUGPA’s work in political advocacy to play a larger role in the future of health care and preservation of independent practices.
  2. Expand membership to include more smaller independent practices that can benefit from LUGPA and bring new knowledge and talent to the organization.
  3. Reach younger physicians through leadership programs and recruitment to independent practices.

A Message from Program Chair, Dr. Scott B. Sellinger

Our 2022 meeting embodied the theme of “Independent Urology Powered by Innovation.” Our speakers shared timely and insightful solutions to the current landscape of independent urology and the challenges we face. Our goal over the past two years has been to expand on the style of our meetings and provide more opportunities for group participation and problem solving, which has shown positive results.

Our breakout sessions returned to the meeting this year, giving attendees a chance to discuss fascinating topics in interactive and engaging ways. From “The Ins and Outs of Mergers and Acquisitions, Private Equity and Management Services Organizations” session to the “Creative Staffing Models to Accelerate Recruitment and Improve Retention” session, attendees received relevant content to help improve their practices.

Over the course of three days, we gained valuable knowledge and skills to implement innovation in our practices and exchanged ideas and solutions with each other.

We look forward to another exciting year celebrating our accomplishments and working together to strengthen our practices and independent urology through innovation.

Day 1 Highlights

To begin the first day of the meeting, practice administrators, radiation and oncology professionals, medical directors, lab directors and managers and research coordinators participated in interactive working groups, where they had the opportunity to connect with urologists who have similar roles at practices around the country.

The highly anticipated CME program, led by Dr. Neal Shore and Dr. Gordon Brown, included a variety of sessions on relevant and new topics, including PSMA-PET, APCC Optimization and Appreciating Diversity in Urologic Care. Throughout the program, attendance and participation were high, leading to valuable conversations and great take-aways.

During the evening, attendees enjoyed networking events with colleagues and new connections, ending the night with the LUGPA Forward “Mingle on the Magnificent Mile” Reception.

Day 2 Highlights

Dr. Sellinger presented Dr. E. David Crawford with a
Certificate of Honorary LUGPA Membership

Dr. Henderson emphasized the importance of unity within LUGPA, explaining that it provides strength and allows LUGPA to succeed. Dr. Henderson announced the new LUGPA One Committee, as well as the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, both of which will encourage unity among the individuals of LUGPA.

Following his presidential update, Dr. Henderson presented the first-ever LUGPA Spirit of Independence Award to Dr. Gail Reede Jones (pictured) for her dedication and service to her patients and independent urology. Dr. Henderson also discussed LUGPA’s collaboration with Specialty Networks with Darren Dieleman, and then proceeded to moderate an engaging Health Policy Forum with LUGPA experts Dr. Mara R. Holton, Dr. Deepak Kapoor, Dr. Gary Kirsh, John McManus and Elizabeth Barnett.

LUGPA was honored to welcome guest speaker, political analyst Amy Walter, who gave an insightful political analysis of the current and future political landscape, followed by a Q&A with members of LUGPA’s Health Policy and Political Affairs team. To conclude the policy discussions of the day, Dr. Gary Kirsh gave the Political Affairs Update.

The presentation was followed by a panel, where experts went into more detail about these important topics.

For the rest of the morning, attendees participated in breakout sessions of their choosing, learning about topics including improving staffing models, mergers and acquisitions, addressing an active shooter incident, restructuring care delivery models and an open-mic session.
