CMS Introduce Accelerated and Advance Payments to Providers in the Wake of CHANGE Cyber-Attack

We understand the significant challenges many of you have faced with medical claims and payments following the cyber-attack on CHANGE Healthcare on February 21st. While UnitedHealth Group has taken steps to alleviate some of these difficulties with its temporary provider assistance fund, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have grappled with the question of whether they possess the statutory authority to offer accelerated and advanced payments to providers, especially in Part B.

This uncertainty stemmed from the absence of emergency waiver authorities, which were granted during the pandemic and are no longer in effect.

However, we're pleased to share that CMS has recently issued additional provider assistance, particularly aimed at providers in Part B. Their latest announcements indicate that, alongside considering applications for accelerated payments for Medicare Part A providers, they will now also consider applications for advance payments for Part B providers.
