Chicago Dining Suggestions from Dr. Harris

      Past President, Richard Harris, MD

While Chicago may be known as the second city, when it comes to dining it is second to none. Below is a list by category of some of the best the city has to offer. Many mentioned may take months to get a reservation, but with Covid and cancellations one never knows. My advice is to call and schedule now.

5 Star Experience
These are expensive.  In no particular order:  Alinea, Next, Sepia, Oriole

Chicago Pizza (is there any better?)
Unos (where it all began) Due’s, Lou Malnati (various locations). Ginos, Pequods

Northern Italian upscale
Riccardo Trattoria (large eclectic menus, a favorite, but small dining room), Prosecco, Piccolo Sogno, RPM Italian

Red sauce Italian - Less expensive
Tufano's Vernon Park Tap (iconic 80 year-old place with best fried calamari and Chicken Vesuvio. Cash or check only, not fancy and inexpensive). Victory on Ontario Street, La Scarola, Monteverde

Steaks (Can anyone compete with Chicago?)
Gibsons, Prime and Provisions, RPM Steak, Maple and Ash, Chicago Cut, Gene and Georgettis, Chicago Chop House, Bavette's Bar & Boeuf, Swift and Sons

Seafood
Joes Stone Crab, GT Fish and Oyster, Shaw's Crab House, Lena Brava, RPM Seafood

Greek
The Greek Islands, Athena

Peking Duck
Sun Wah (A bit of a drive, but rated in the top two nationally by the NYT. Order duck one day in advance.)

Except for Sun Wah, all of the aforementioned places should be a 10-20 minute cab ride (depending on traffic of course). There are also a plethora of ethnic cuisine places from Indian to Ethiopian but most are a bit of a drive. Hopefully this will be a good reference to start your dining experience in the great city of Chicago. Happy Eating!
